BBF109 - The Gospel of Matthew: This course will delve into the unique perspective of the Gospel of Matthew, particularly its first fifteen chapters. These chapters outline the birth, early life, and ministry of Jesus Christ, emphasizing His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies as the promised Messiah. Matthew demonstrates to the Jewish people that Jesus is the King, Israel’s long-awaited Messiah. Through critical analysis of the text and participation in interactive discussions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of Jesus' early ministry and the foundational teachings of the Gospel of Matthew and learn how Matthew's Gospel shapes Christian faith and practice. Additionally, participants will better understand Jesus' calls to discipleship for His followers -- a life of commitment, sacrifice, and mission, which involves learning from Jesus and participating in His work, facing challenges, and enduring opposition. Participants will be allowed to reflect on their lives and communities and explore how to apply these teachings to their context as they answer the call to discipleship.
- Overview of Matthew 1-15: Matthew chapters 1-15 focus on the identity of the King. He starts this discourse with the genealogy and birth of Jesus, the Magi's visit, and Jesus's early escape to Egypt. He continues with His baptism by John the Baptist, showing us the temptations in the wilderness. He highlights Jesus' teaching ministry in Galilee, including the Sermon on the Mount, the miracles he performed, and the call of His disciples. He talks about how Jesus sent out the twelve apostles and showed us how His parables and miracles demonstrated His authority over nature, illness, demons, and even death. Finally, in the last chapter, we see Jesus address the traditions of the Pharisees, perform healings, and feed four thousand people, reinforcing His role as the compassionate and divine Messiah, offering comfort and love to all.
